Legislative Alert: Middle Class Tax Cut Act of 2011 (S. 1917)
    Samuel, William (2011-12-01)
[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I am writing to urge you to vote for a one-year extension of a reduction in payroll taxes, as provided by the Middle Class Tax Cut Act of 2011 (S. 1917). The U.S. economy is still suffering from an economic crisis that was caused by economic policies that failed because they served the interests of Wall Street and the richest one percent of Americans, rather than the remaining 99 percent of us. Much more needs to be done to get us out of this crisis, to close our jobs deficit and put America back to work. The AFL-CIO has proposed a 6-point jobs plan, and we challenge both parties to fight for solutions that are on the same scale as the problems we face.

Legislative Alert: FY2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)
    Samuel, William (2011-05-11)
[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, 1 am writing to urge you to reject efforts to revive the A-76 privatization process when the Committee considers the FY 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) later this week. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Department of Defense (DOD) Inspector General have repeatedly found that no reliable methods have been established to accurately measure either costs or savings due to contracting out. and that the cost of carrying out the studies themselves often exceeds any of the alleged savings.

[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I am writing to urge conferees to retain the safeguard against the controversial OMB Circular A-76 privatization process in the Corps of Engineers (CoE) in the FY 2012 Energy and Water Development appropriations bill, which has been included as a bipartisan general provision since the FY 2008 version of this funding measure.

Legislative Alert: The Reciprocal Market Access Act of 2011 (H.R. 1749)
    Samuel, William (2011-06-01)
[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I write in support of H.R. 1749, the Reciprocal Market Access Act of 2011. This legislation would help boost our economy and increase exports by ensuring the elimination of foreign market access barriers before reducing U.S. tariffs on similar products.
